Structural Shop Drawings- A quick guide to check on Structural Shop Drawings

The main important thing while checking shop drawings is you should always keep in the mind shop drawings are the detailed drawings of the design drawings. Hence, design drawings shall be given utmost priority. It is generally not permitted to change the design criteria and size of the primary structural elements until and unless structural recalculation is performed under the supervision of the experienced structural engineers.

We will discuss the things to be considered for the concrete part in this blog. I will provide you with the real Project examples which I encountered during my work.

1)     Size of all the structural elements like columns, slabs, girders, rafts, and beams shall be as per the design drawings. All the elements ID/Unique Name based on the size and reinforcement types shall be clearly mentioned.

In case of missing id in the shop drawing you can comment as below:

2)     Depth of Cover to Reinforcement

Depth of Cover refers to the distance from the elements outermost part to the outermost reinforcement. It is very important to keep correct depth of cover to avoid the rusting of reinforcement. General Rules of practice for the Depth of Cover to Reinforcement is as below:

Please note above table does not apply to all the projects. You should see your design documents to confirm the depth of cover.

Also, there are common mistakes of making the depth of cover same for the concrete exposed to soil and not exposed to soil.

If you find such case, you can comment as below:

3)     Confirmation of the grade of the structural elements

Concrete grade is the significant property of the RC Structural Elements. You should thoroughly confirm the grade of all the structural elements with the structural report. Because it is the basis of providing the strength to the structure and development length, lapping length, and construction method at the joint of different grade concrete also depends on the concrete grade.
